Chapter Eleven

The group retraced their steps through the rug merchant’s shop, up the hidden stairway, and back into the room decorated in silk.

“Okay, since I have the training in disguise and distraction, let me make a few decisions here,” Cassandra said.

“Okay with me,” Trinh said. “Whatever I have to do to keep my head attached is just fine with me.”

“The biggest thing with disguise is changing the silhouette, especially at night. I still don’t trust Hussein not to follow us, so if we really want to blend in with everyone else in the marketplace, we need to split up into two pairs. Being covered head to toe helps.”

“What if we look different ages?” Gina asked. “Like mother and daughter? Or one of us could dress like a man. That’s what we did for a couple of stakeouts I was on.”

Trinh snickered. “Not hiding that figure in men’s clothes.”

“Okay, you, Trinh. You and I are the tallest of the four of us,” Cassandra said.

“I guess I’m the one that said I’d do anything,” Trinh said. “Unfortunately, I didn’t bring jeans or flannel shirts.”

“Need to dress like Middle Eastern men, in the style of clothing they wear.”

“I haven’t seen many men around, especially in the marketplace. It’s all women shopping there.” Maile called Aidan, who was proving to be their best asset on that trip. “We’re in a bind.”

“I hear Aziz won’t be a problem to you anymore?”

“Unbelievably, he still is. But we’re in kind of a hurry, Aidan. We need a couple sets of men’s clothing. Any idea where in the palace we can get something like that?”

“In my old bedroom is an armoire. He kept clothes in there. Maybe some of it is still there?”

“Clothing for a prince? Is there anything ordinary?”

“There was stuff he’d wear to dinner.” Aidan giggled. “I doubt he’d mind if you borrowed something.”

“Thanks.” Maile told the others to go look in the armoire. “Hey, what’s the deal with Bab-el Waha? Is it really haunted?”

“Stay away from that place, Maile. I’m warning you, stay away from there.”

“What’s wrong with it?”

“Anissa and I heard the story once, so we went late one night to check it out. There was all sorts of weird stuff going on.”

“Weird how?”

“Weird like mist and odd colors in the sky. Have you ever seen the northern lights?”

“I’ve heard about them.”

“That’s what the colors were like, but really low, just above our heads.”

Maile got a shiver. “Anything else?”

“Weird moaning sounds.”

“Like someone was in pain?” Maile asked.

“Like a bored wife trying to fake it, if you know what I mean.”

“I know what that sounds like,” Maile said. “We’ll only be there for a moment, just to walk through.”

“Make it snappy and don’t hang around any longer than you have to. What’s going on, anyway? Nobody ever uses that gate.”

“We’re joining a camel train out to the desert.”

“Isn’t it night time there? Oh, wait, you’re going with Abdul the Loner?”

“You know him?” Maile asked.

“Everybody in Khashraq City knows Abdul the Loner. He’s the last of the true camel drivers in that part of the desert.
